His name is Jon Snow, or just "Snow" for short. Like his namesake from Game of Thrones, he wears solid black fur, all the time. And he also has uncertain parentage.
Snow doesn't have much boating experience - and in fact he's rather lazy, preferring to sleep most of the day away. But he will nonetheless be very useful on board. He doesn't take up much space, and doesn't even need his own cabin. He will watch my every move, to make sure that I'm doing it right. And if any vermin try to stowaway, he'll be sure to dispatch them quickly. Best of all, on those cold nights he'll provide a bit of extra warmth.
He's been our faithful house cat at our home in Houston for many years. He just showed up one day, at the time a not quite full-grown kitten, and stuck around. Before introducing him to boat life, we waited until Joan came aboard Dragonfly full-time, and the bulk of my projects were complete.
We debated whether to bring him on
our trip. We're planning to cross an
international border, and having animals on board can cause complications. And then there's finding a place for his
food, water, and litter box. But Joan
loves him to pieces, and couldn't bear the thought of leaving him behind. So welcome aboard, Snow.
In other news, we are now counting down the days till departure. We have an excellent lunar tide window on the weekend of Jan 30/31, just ONE WEEK AWAY! We'll have to leave to marina in the wee morning hours to ride the tide. The weather forecast (as of today) is Ok but not great: southerly winds starting Friday and continuing all weekend, high temps around 70, with a chance of rain. But it will be a while before another feasible opportunity arises, so we gotta go for it!
